AFTER WORK, I headed home and took a shower. As I was about to leave, I realized that my truck would be hard for my grandmother to climb up into. I knew she could still ride on the back of my bike, however, as long as I took the side-streets and didn’t drive too crazy. I grabbed an extra helmet and the keys to my Hog.

It took me fifteen minutes to get to the nursing home. As I was entering the building, my cell phone rang. It was Brass.

“Hey, brother, what’s up?” I said into the phone.

“I need you to relieve me for a while. I’d like to go home and take a shower before the meeting with Charlie tonight.”

Shit. “I was just about to bring my grandmother to a birthday party. Can you wait another hour or two?”

“Tell you what, just get your ass over here before seven. That should give me enough time to do the shit I need to do.”

“Okay. I’ll definitely be there.”

“I appreciate it.”

After we hung up, I checked in with the receptionist and then headed to my grandmother’s room.

“Vaughnie,” she said, smiling when I entered. “I’m so glad you’re able to do this for me. Now I get to spend the day with two of my most favorite people. You and Ruthie.”

I gave her a hug, smiling at the fact that she still called me Vaughnie. “Hi. How’ve you been?”

“Not too bad, actually. I’ve started doing some yoga classes and I think they’ve been helping with my arthritis.”

“I’m glad to hear that. I brought my motorcycle, though. Do you think you can handle riding on the back?”

“You did?” she exclaimed, looking giddy. “I haven’t been on the back of a motorcycle since your grandfather died. I’m so excited I could just pee myself.”

My eyes widened.

She laughed and slapped my shoulder. “I’m just messing with you, Vaughnie. Besides, if I do pee, I’ve got my padded panties on. They don’t leak. Not much, anyway. Your seat is leather, right?”

“Yes. Uh, maybe we should just take a cab?”

Her eyes twinkled. “You really don’t know when I’m joking, do you?”

I relaxed. “It’s because you’re so good at it.”

She tapped the side of her head. “That’s because my mind is all I’ve got left, Vaughnie. So, take my advice and don’t do drugs or you’ll regret it when you’re my age.”

“Don’t worry. I stay clear from that shit.”

Her smile fell. “That’s too bad, I was hoping you had some Mary Jane on you.”

I gave her a confused look.

She chuckled and then lowered her voice. “Got you again. Listen, when I say drugs, I’m talking meth and cocaine. Not pot. It’s easier to sneak that stuff into here than it is booze. Next time you visit, remember that.”

I shook my head, smiling. My grandmother was as witty and sharp as ever. It was hard to believe that she was closing in on eighty. She was still nice looking, too, with her perfectly coiffed white hair and bright blue eyes.

“You all ready to go?” I asked, staring at her.
